Flower Girl Sash Instructions

Click Picture for More Detail

This is the ideal sash for a flower girl to wear with a simple elegant dress. Just place it around her waist and tie the tails into a beautiful bow, and watch her eyes light up!

Directions:
  1. Measure the waist of the wearer, as for a belt.
  2. Cut a length of ribbon the length of the waist measurement plus 16” (this is for the bow and tails).
  3. Lay the ribbon on a flat surface. Measure, in from one end, 8”, this is where you will begin adding flowers. Place a straight pin at this point to mark it. Do the same to the other end, 8” in.
  4. Create tiny clusters of flowers, no more than 1” long, by gathering a few stems of small flowers together and taping with floral tape. Do this before assembling the sash. Start at the pinpoint, by removing the straight pin, and floral taping the flower clusters onto the ribbon.
  5. Tape another cluster on top of the stems of the last cluster, overlapping each other and alternating the heads from right to left, to give a tight, compact, professional look.
  6. Do this in the same manner, until the next straight pin is reached. Remove pin.
  7. Make sure that there are two 8” lengths of ribbon left at the ends, to tie the sash with. Trim the ends on an angle. Be careful when handling the sash, it will be flimsy and soft, rather than stiff.
  8. If using fresh flowers: Mist with cool water (avoid getting any of the water on the ribbon tails) and place on tissue in a box. Keep refrigerated.
Note: If using fresh flowers, please make sure that they are processed properly to insure adequate prolonged life.

Helpful Tip: A wide thick ribbon, preferably a good quality double faced satin or taffeta would be ideal for this type of decorative sash. It has just enough body to keep the sash looking “perky” without drooping under the weight of the heavy blossoms. The best flower choices for this project are tiny floral heads, such as delphinium blossoms, spray roses, lilac blossoms, wax flowers, hyacinth blossoms, or stephanotis.
