Boutonniere Instructions

Boutonnieres are usually made of one to two small flowers, and at times filler and/or greenery. The flower of choice is much more elegant and classic when chosen to match the style of the tux or suit worn, and is always about 1/4 the size of a corsage or smaller. If desired, ribbon maybe used to satin wrap the stem, but please avoid using bows on boutonnieres. Place a small piece of greenery behind the flower and/or any filler then floral tape to the stem of the main flower. Trim stem, at a 45-degree angle, with sharp clippers to a 1/4". Place one small black-headed boutonniere pin through back of stem into flower head.       Note: If using fresh flowers, please make sure that they are processed properly to insure adequate prolonged life. Mist with cool water and place on tissue in a box or in a corsage bag. Keep refrigerate. Helpful Tip: When designing a boutonniere, consider the flowers that they will complement. For example, it is always nice for a Groom’s boutonniere to complement the Bride’s bouquet whether it is by using the same type, color, or texture of flowers. And the same holds true for the rest of the wedding party. You may also consider uncommon materials, to add a masculine touch. Boutonnieres using a small wooden or metal bead slipped over the stem; a piece of leather or even a piece of bamboo look very up to date. You may also think about using “less” when it comes to the flowers boutonnieres—just an acorn, or an interesting leaf. This will help to give a classic look that will help any man look his best. How to pin on and wear boutonniere: With one hand behind holding the stem of the boutonniere, flowers facing away from the wearer and toward you, place the boutonniere at a slight angle on the dress or lapel. This is an average of about 4 inches in from the tip of the left shoulder. Make sure that the boutonniere is evenly placed on the lapel before attempting to pin it. Use a Boutonniere Pin to pin into the fabric at the bottom left corner of the stem. Weave the pin back out from under the fabric. Push it through about 1 inch, laying it at an angle over the top of the boutonniere stem. Stick the tip of the pin back into the fabric on the other side of the stem. Insure that the stem is tightly in place with the length of the pin pushing it down. Weave the pin back out of the fabric once more. Be sure that the very tip of the pin does not stick out, nor does it poke under the fabric and touch the skin. Helpful Tip: A boutonniere is always worn on the left side of the body. For a clean polished look try weaving the Boutonniere Pin through the underside of the lapel. This keeps the head of the pin from showing, for a smart look. Another alternative to Boutonniere Pins, try using a strong adhesive magnet made especially for corsages and boutonnieres. One part of the magnet sticks to the underside of the boutonniere, while the other side is slid under the lapel, attracting itself to the magnet and clamping the boutonniere in place.
